五金这个词的来源
《现代汉语词典》载：
五金：指金、银、铜、铁、锡，泛指金属。
《词海》载：
五金：指金、银、铜、铁、锡而言，今常用为金属或铜铁等制品的统称。
《辞海》载：
五金：五种金属。《吴越春秋》四《阖闾内传》：“臣闻越王元常使欧冶子造剑五枚，……一名湛卢，五金之英，太阳之精。”按《汉书·食货志》上“金、刀、龟、贝”注：“金谓五色之金也，黄者曰金，白者曰银，赤者曰铜，青者曰铅，黑者曰铁。”后来通称金、银、铜、铁、锡为五金。
五金者，指金、银、铜、铁、锡五项金属材料之称，五金为工业之母；国防之基础，五金材料之产品，通常只分为大五金及小五金两大类。大五金指钢板、钢筋，扁铁、万能角钢、槽铁、工字铁及各类型之钢铁材料，小五金则为建筑五金、白铁皮、锁类铁钉、铁丝、钢铁丝网、钢丝剪、家庭五金、各种工具等等。
